Google Business Profile Setup Guide
Google Business Profile is the #1 most important listing for local businesses. When someone searches for your category on Google (e.g., "plumbers near me"), your Google Business Profile determines if you appear in Google Maps and local search results. This affects ALL AI platforms because ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity all pull data from Google.

Guided setup
Step 1: Claim Your Business
Go to business.google.com and search for your business name. If it exists, claim it. If not, create a new listing.
Expected result: Google will show you a preview of your listing and ask you to verify ownership.
- Using keywords in business name ("Best Plumber in Seattle Joe's")
- Choosing generic category instead of specific one
- Using PO Box instead of physical address
- Google prefers businesses with consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all platforms
- Choose primary category carefully - this affects what searches you appear in most
Step 2: Verify Your Business
Google will send a verification postcard to your business address with a 5-digit code. This can take 5-14 days.
Expected result: Your business listing will become "Verified" and visible in Google Maps and search results.
- Not checking mail regularly - postcard expires after 30 days
- Entering code incorrectly
- Request postcard immediately - don't wait
- Some businesses can verify by phone or email if eligible
Step 3: Complete Your Profile
Fill out all sections: description, hours, services, photos, etc. Google favors complete profiles.
Expected result: Your profile will be 100% complete with a green checkmark.
- Leaving description blank or too short
- Using generic description copied from competitors
- Not updating hours for holidays
- Use clear, current photos to help customers recognize your business
- Add photos every month to stay active in Google's algorithm
Step 4: Add Photos & Videos
Upload at least 10 high-quality photos: exterior, interior, team, work examples, logo.
Expected result: Your listing will have a photo carousel that appears in search results.
- Using stock photos - customers can tell
- Low-quality or blurry photos
- Only uploading 1-2 photos
- Keep photos current so customers can see your business before visiting
- Update photos monthly - Google rewards active profiles
Step 5: Enable Messaging & Q&A
Turn on Google messaging so customers can text you directly from Google. Monitor and answer Q&A.
Expected result: Customers will see a "Message" button on your Google Business Profile.
- Enabling messaging but never responding
- Not monitoring Q&A section
- Response time affects your ranking - reply within 24 hours
- Answer Q&A with location-specific keywords ("Yes, we serve Seattle and Tacoma")
