Your SEO Agency Is Not Lying to You. But They Are Not Telling You the Truth Either.

I am going to say something that is going to get me in trouble with a lot of people who run digital marketing agencies. I want to say upfront that I do not think most of them are bad people. I think most of them are genuinely skilled at what they do and genuinely believe in it.

But I spent 25 years as a lawyer and a CHRO watching people tell partial truths because the full truth was inconvenient for them financially. I know what it looks like. And the SEO industry right now has a structural conflict of interest that nobody is talking about loudly enough.

A Seer Interactive study of 25.1 million organic impressions found that organic click-through rates dropped from 1.76 percent to 0.61 percent — a 61 percent decline — for queries where Google AI Overviews appear. Ahrefs confirmed it with a 300,000-keyword study showing AI Overviews reduce click-through rates for position-one content by 58 percent. Position one. The thing your SEO agency is charging you to achieve. Fifty-eight percent fewer clicks than it generated before AI showed up on the page. The ranking is real. The traffic it used to produce is not what it was.

The Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 actual searches in a peer-reviewed behavioral study and found that only 8 percent of users clicked a traditional result when an AI summary appeared. Less than 1 percent clicked links within AI Overviews themselves. Zero-click searches hit 80 to 83 percent when AI Overviews appear according to Similarweb and Bain-Dynata data. More than four out of five searches that trigger an AI summary end without anyone clicking anything. Your number one ranking is sitting below content that most people read and leave without clicking.

Here is the conflict of interest: the monthly report your agency sends shows your rankings. It does not show the revenue those rankings used to generate versus what they generate now. If your position-one ranking is producing 58 percent fewer clicks than two years ago, the report looks fine and your business is bleeding. The metrics were designed for a world where ranking meant traffic. That world is changing and the agency that built their business on it is not the right voice to tell you how much.

Seer Interactive also found that even queries without AI Overviews saw a 41 percent click-through rate decline year over year. Users have been behaviorally conditioned to expect instant answers even when AI does not appear. The behavior change is not limited to AI-heavy queries. It has spread to everything because people have learned that clicking is usually not necessary anymore. This is permanent.

Apple confirmed in 2025 that Google search volume declined for the first time in 22 years. Stan Ventures tracked Google’s share of general information searches falling from 73 percent to 66.9 percent between February and August 2025, while ChatGPT’s share tripled from 4.1 percent to 12.5 percent in the same period.

Your SEO agency is not your enemy. Protect your Google presence — it still matters. But get clear that the person charging you to optimize for a declining channel has a reason to tell you the channel is fine. The data says something different. MiddleVerse was built for the channel that 44 percent of consumers now call their primary discovery source according to McKinsey’s October 2025 research — the one your SEO report does not cover.
