Congratulations on Your Number One Google Ranking. Almost Nobody Saw It.
By Melinda Starbird — March 3, 2026
You did the work. You optimized the content, built the backlinks, fixed the technical issues, paid the agency for months or years. You are number one on Google for your category in your city. That is real and it took real effort.
Now let me show you what it is actually worth.
AI Overviews now consume 42 percent of desktop screen space and 48 percent of mobile according to WordStream research. They push the first organic result 1,686 pixels below the fold. Below the fold means below the part of the screen most users see without scrolling. Your number one ranking — the thing you paid to achieve — is sitting in the part of the page that most people in most searches never reach.
The Pew Research Center ran a peer-reviewed behavioral study tracking 68,879 actual searches. When an AI summary appeared, only 8 percent of users clicked a traditional result. Less than 1 percent clicked links within the AI Overview itself. Semrush 2025 data shows zero-click searches now account for 58 to 60 percent of all Google queries. When AI Overviews appear that rate jumps to 80 to 83 percent according to Similarweb and Bain-Dynata. In Google’s own AI Mode the rate reaches 93 percent according to Exposure Ninja.
Ahrefs ran a 300,000-keyword study. AI Overviews reduce click-through rates for position-one content by 58 percent. Not position ten. Position one. The position your agency reports as a win. Fifty-eight percent fewer clicks than the same position generated before AI appeared on the results page.
I am a lawyer. I know how to read data without wanting it to say something different than it says. This data says that first place on Google is producing roughly half the clicks it produced before AI showed up, for a growing percentage of queries. The channel is not dead. But the return on the investment you have been making in it has been quietly declining while the monthly report shows your ranking held steady.
Only 7.2 percent of domains appear in both Google AI Overviews and large language model results according to Search Engine Land research. Google ranking and AI visibility are separate systems. A business can dominate Google and be invisible to every AI platform simultaneously. This is not an edge case. It is the normal state for the overwhelming majority of businesses that have invested in SEO.
Gartner projected that traditional search engine volume would drop 25 percent by 2026. Apple confirmed in 2025 that Google search volume declined for the first time in 22 years. McKinsey’s October 2025 report found 44 percent of consumers now call AI-powered search their primary discovery source. Your number one Google ranking covers roughly half of how new customers find businesses like yours. The other half — the half that is growing fastest — is the half you are probably not in.
MiddleVerse does not tell you to walk away from Google. Keep the ranking. But stop mistaking it for the whole game. It is not anymore.
