Gen Z Already Ranks Google Third for Local Discovery. Your Future Customer Is Already Gone.

I want to show you a number before I say anything else.

The SOCi Consumer Behavior Index asked Gen Z — people between 18 and 28, the generation entering peak spending years right now — where they go to find local businesses. The top three answers were Instagram at 67 percent, TikTok at 62 percent, and Google Search at 61 percent. Google is in third place. For the generation that will be your primary customer base for the next 30 years, Google is already not the first place they look.

And that survey did not even ask about AI assistants separately.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that AI tools grew from 6 percent to 45 percent of consumers using them for local business recommendations in a single year — a 7.5 times increase in twelve months. AI is now the third most popular source for local business recommendations overall, behind only Google and Facebook. For the generation already ranking Google third, AI is likely higher still.

Adobe’s May 2025 survey found that 28 percent of Gen Z consumers already start their searches on ChatGPT, and 47 percent have discovered a new product or brand through it. A Vox Media and Two Cents Insights survey of more than 2,000 adults found 61 percent of Gen Z use AI tools instead of Google. These are not people who might someday shift their behavior. They already have.

The argument I keep hearing is that this is a young people problem — that Boomers and Gen X still use Google and they are the real customers. I understand the logic. I also have the data that complicates it.

Menlo Ventures ran a nationally representative survey of 5,031 adults and found that Millennials — ages 29 to 44, the generation with the most purchasing power in the country right now — report more daily AI usage than Gen Z. PYMNTS Intelligence data shows 52 percent of Millennials rely on generative AI for work, the highest of any cohort. Capital One data shows 58 percent of Millennials either use AI to shop or plan to. The generation with the money is more into AI than the generation everyone keeps pointing at.

And then there are Boomers. Capital One Shopping data shows Boomer satisfaction with AI shopping jumped 61 percent year over year — the steepest satisfaction gain of any generation. Fifty-one percent of shoppers over 65 have engaged with AI shopping assistants. The “only young people use AI” argument has no generational support left.

McKinsey’s October 2025 report found 50 percent of consumers now intentionally seek out AI-powered search, and 44 percent call it their primary and preferred discovery source versus 31 percent who still prefer traditional search. Apple confirmed in 2025 that Google search volume declined for the first time in 22 years.

My grandmother Teresa ran the Greyhound station in Cle Elum until she was 85. She adapted to every change the world threw at her for nine decades. The businesses that survive the next ten years will be the ones that look at generational data honestly and adjust — not the ones that keep marketing to a customer behavior that is quietly becoming the past. MiddleVerse exists because that adjustment should not require a budget most small businesses will never have.
