How to Test Whether Your Business Appears in AI Responses

A repeatable process for reviewing responses from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI products.

An AI visibility test captures what a particular product returned for a particular prompt at a particular time. Results can vary with wording, location, model version, browsing mode, personalization, and available sources. Absence from a response does not mean a business does not exist, and a mention does not prove a referral or customer outcome.

Prepare comparable prompts

Use prompts that reflect relevant customer questions:

  • "What [business category] options are in [city]?"
  • "Which [service] providers serve [area]?"
  • "Tell me about [business name]."
  • "Which [category] businesses offer [specific documented feature]?"

Record the exact prompt and any location or account context. Avoid treating labels such as "best" as objective rankings unless the platform defines and substantiates them.

Test each platform separately

For each supported product:

  1. Record the date, model, and browsing or search mode.
  2. Start a new conversation where practical.
  3. submit the same prompt.
  4. Save the complete response and cited sources.
  5. Note whether the business was mentioned and whether its facts were accurate.

Different responses are expected because platforms do not use identical systems or sources.

Interpret the evidence carefully

Mentioned with accurate information

This shows that the tested response included the business with the facts observed. It does not establish a stable rank, future inclusion, customer selection, or a sale.

Mentioned with inaccurate information

Identify the cited or likely source where possible, then correct public information at its source. A correction may not appear immediately because providers control refresh schedules.

Mentioned in some responses but not others

Document the variation and review relevant sources. Do not assume another business captured a recommendation or customer.

Not mentioned

Review the business website, maps, directories, and industry platforms for missing or conflicting facts. The result is a prompt-level observation, not proof that the platform cannot identify the business or that revenue was lost.

Create a baseline

Track platform, prompt, date, mention status, displayed facts, citations, and notes in a spreadsheet. Repeat the same tests periodically. Changes can reflect platform updates as well as changes to public business information.

If you need to measure traffic, calls, bookings, or sales, use first-party analytics and attribution. Do not infer those outcomes from an AI response alone.

What MiddleVerse can report

MiddleVerse can record observed responses across supported prompts and platforms and identify eligible information-quality work. It cannot determine why a third-party model produced an answer or guarantee a future output.

AI platform outputs and customer decisions are outside MiddleVerse's control. A scan does not promise citations, rankings, discovery, traffic, customers, bookings, sales, or revenue.

MiddleVerse offers a free visibility scan for supported platforms and prompts, with results presented as observations rather than customer outcomes.
