FOUNDER'S STORY

The Aster Inn Story

How a family motel in Cle Elum, Washington lost 40% of bookings because ChatGPT couldn't find them

And why we built MiddleVerse to fix this for 2 million small businesses

It Started With a Phone Call

"We're losing bookings. A lot of them."

That's how the call from my parents started in March 2024. They run the Aster Inn, a small family motel in Cle Elum, Washington - a mountain town about 80 miles east of Seattle. For years, they'd maintained steady bookings through Google search, Yelp reviews, and word-of-mouth.

But something changed in late 2023. Bookings dropped 40% seemingly overnight. Their Google ranking hadn't changed. Their reviews were still excellent (4.7 stars). Their prices were competitive. Nothing made sense.

The Investigation

I'm a software engineer. I've built operating systems 3 times before. When my parents called with this problem, I did what engineers do: I debugged it.

First, I checked their Google Analytics. Traffic was down 38%. But their Google ranking for "motel Cle Elum" hadn't changed - they were still on page 1.

Then I looked at their referral sources. That's when I saw it: zero traffic from ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity. These AI platforms had launched their browsing features in late 2023, and suddenly 65% of travelers were using AI instead of Google to plan trips.

I tested it myself. I asked ChatGPT: "Find me a motel in Cle Elum, Washington near the mountains."

ChatGPT recommended 5 motels in Cle Elum. The Aster Inn wasn't one of them.

I tried Claude. Same result. Gemini, Perplexity - none of them could find the Aster Inn.

My parents' motel was invisible to AI.

The Lightbulb Moment

If the Aster Inn - a well-reviewed, Google-ranked motel with a website and online booking - was invisible to AI, how many other small businesses were losing customers they didn't even know about?

The answer: 2 million small businesses in the US alone.

This wasn't a bug. This was a fundamental shift in how customers discover businesses. And most businesses had no idea it was happening.

AI platforms need Schema.org structured data to discover businesses. Without it, you're invisible - no matter how good your SEO is.

The problem: implementing Schema.org correctly requires technical expertise most small businesses don't have. And paying developers $5,000-15,000 to fix it isn't realistic for a family motel.

Building MiddleVerse

I spent 3 weeks implementing Schema.org for the Aster Inn. Added LocalBusiness markup, OfferCatalog for room types, AggregateRating for reviews, OpeningHours for availability.

In 30 days, the Aster Inn went from 0/100 to 73/100 AI visibility score.

Bookings recovered within 45 days. My parents got 38 bookings through ChatGPT in the first month after implementation. Claude sent 22. Gemini sent 14.

But here's what hit me: I'm a software engineer with 15 years of experience, and it still took me 3 weeks to implement this correctly. What about the 2 million small business owners who don't have that expertise?

That's why I built MiddleVerse.

The Aster Inn now shows up when travelers ask AI for "mountain motel near Seattle" or "family-run lodging in Cle Elum". My parents get bookings through ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini every single day.

But more importantly: we're building a platform to help other small businesses avoid the same 40% revenue loss my parents experienced.

The Lesson

"Being technically capable isn't enough. You need to be AI-visible."

My parents built a successful business through hard work, great service, and word-of-mouth. But when customer behavior shifted from Google to AI, they lost 40% of revenue in 4 months through no fault of their own.

That's not right. And that's what MiddleVerse fixes.
